Which route could apply
The current agency guidance distinguishes ordinary naturalisation, the simplified spouse route, exceptional grants, restoration and other nationality connections. Ordinary adult naturalisation generally requires ten consecutive years of lawful residence, Georgian language/history/basic-law knowledge and a qualifying economic connection such as employment, property, business or a share in a Georgian enterprise.
Evidence must support the particular route. A property purchase can contribute to an economic connection but does not replace the ordinary residence and knowledge requirements. Establish any descent or prior-nationality claim separately, with parental and civil records rather than assumptions about birthplace.
Marriage and family do not create an automatic passport
The simplified route for a spouse of a Georgian citizen generally requires five consecutive years of lawful residence and the prescribed knowledge tests. The marriage must support the actual route; it does not automatically change either spouse’s nationality. A foreign spouse’s residence-permit rules are also separate from nationality eligibility.
Children’s nationality depends on the relevant parentage, adoption or naturalisation provisions. A family’s residence approval does not mean every member becomes a citizen at the same time. Review the legal parent-child connection and each child’s age and consent requirements before submitting associated applications.
Exceptional citizenship is a discretionary route
An exceptional grant concerns special merit or state interests assessed under the nationality framework. Investment may be a relevant circumstance in the authority’s assessment, but the cited sources do not establish an automatic retail citizenship-by-investment product at a fixed price. The investment residence routes should be presented on their own terms.
A credible application needs evidence of the claimed basis and the agency’s requested recommendations and records. Payment to a service provider or ownership of a qualifying residence asset does not guarantee a presidential citizenship decision.
Check dual nationality before the application
Under the cited nationality provisions, ordinary naturalisation of a foreign citizen generally becomes effective when the Georgian authority receives proof of renunciation of the prior nationality; exceptional grants are treated differently. Georgian citizens taking another nationality have a separate retention-consent process. These are distinct paths, not an unrestricted dual-nationality policy.
The agency’s current service guidance should be read alongside both countries’ nationality rules. The English Organic Law display inspected for this guide is an older consolidation, so full later-amendment reconciliation remains an explicit legal-review item, particularly for unusual retention or restoration histories.
Prepare the application in stages
Collect identity, birth/civil records, lawful-residence history and the relevant economic-connection evidence. The spouse route adds marriage and the Georgian spouse’s citizenship evidence. Establish the required language/history/law testing and any applicable exemption before treating the file as ready.
Applications are handled through the agency/Public Service Hall and, where applicable, Georgian missions abroad. The agency states an overall service period of up to three months for the procedure; that does not include the years needed to become eligible, obtaining foreign documents or all preparation. Confirm current fees and the exact document/legalisation checklist for the route.
Relationship recognition can change the family strategy
Article 4 of the marriage-recognition law excludes same-sex marriage and alternative unions, including foreign-recognised unions, from legal recognition in Georgia. A foreign marriage certificate should therefore not be treated as sufficient for a spouse-based residence or citizenship route in those cases.
Build an independent permission and long-term nationality analysis for each adult and a separate parentage analysis for children. Offshore Capitalist can coordinate the broader plan and implementation scope, with route-specific local legal review where needed.
