What the employment tax scheme changes

For qualifying remuneration, the scheme combines 8% labour-market contribution and 27% tax on the remainder: 8% + 27% × 92% = 32.84%. Its maximum use is seven years. This is a conditional employment tax regime, not a general low-tax status for all income or assets.

For an illustrative DKK 1 million of qualifying remuneration before AM, the two components are DKK 80,000 and DKK 248,400, totalling DKK 328,400. Pension treatment and any other salary adjustments must be established first. Dividends, investments and other income do not become subject to 32.84% merely because the employee uses the scheme.

Review eligibility before relying on a salary offer

The highly paid employee branch has a 2026 qualifying monthly remuneration threshold of DKK 65,400. The approved-researcher branch has its own qualification process. The prior Danish liability history, employer relationship, recruitment timing and salary components must be checked, including the ordinary ten-year look-back and its exceptions.

Do not confuse the tax scheme with the Pay Limit immigration route. A salary can satisfy one route and fail the other, and immigration approval does not bind the tax authority. Someone who already began an ordinary taxed job cannot assume the lower 2026 salary threshold alone allows a switch.

Compare the whole household, not just the rate

Ordinary deductions are unavailable against the specially taxed remuneration. Before choosing the scheme, compare ordinary taxation using the actual municipality, pension and deductions, and review the spouse’s position separately. Housing, investment income and existing company ownership can still create ordinary Danish tax questions.

The value of the regime depends on the actual eligible remuneration and duration. Keep a separate ledger for scheme salary and income outside the regime, so a payroll setup does not accidentally become an unsupported position on a personal return.

The implementation file

A useful implementation review covers the chronology of arrival and employment, prior Danish tax years, the employer and ownership relationship, approved research qualifications where relevant, and the contract’s guaranteed remuneration. Identify the items included in the statutory salary test rather than using an undifferentiated compensation total.

Why registration and continuing review matter

Registration is not an assurance that all conditions have been accepted. The authority can review eligibility and continuous compliance. A remuneration change, work performed abroad or employer change can therefore require advice before implementation, rather than at the year-end return.

For an inquiry, provide the proposed role, salary and pension breakdown, intended start and arrival dates, previous Danish residence/work history and any ownership in the employer. These facts make a comparison useful; a headline annual salary alone is insufficient.
