Departure is more than a flight and deregistration

The home is central to whether full Danish tax liability ends. SKAT says the ordinary position is that the home must be sold, the tenancy ended or the home let for at least three years on terms the owner cannot terminate. Retaining an available home can therefore matter even after you begin living elsewhere.

Civil registration, the destination’s residence permission and treaty residence are separate parts of the file. Document where the household actually lives and works. A holiday property used only for holidays is not automatically treated the same way as an available ordinary home, but actual use still needs review.

Inventory what changes when Danish taxing rights end

List assets and continuing income before deciding the final departure date. The aim is to identify taxes triggered by the move, Danish income that remains taxable and reporting that continues afterwards. Include ownership rights and obligations, not merely cash accounts.

How the share departure rules work

The rules can deem covered shares sold at market value when Danish taxing rights end. The ordinary DKK 100,000 threshold is the total value of the covered portfolio, not its unrealised gain. Negative acquisition values and special transferred positions can require attention even where a simple threshold test suggests otherwise.

The ordinary residence look-back is at least seven years of Danish liability within the preceding ten. Where tax arises, an interest-free deferral may be available with conditions. Some annually taxed investment-company shares are outside that deferral. The destination affects whether security is required; an EU/Nordic move and a move elsewhere should not be treated as identical.

Deferral needs an ongoing file

A deferral changes payment timing. It does not turn the liability into an exemption. Keep the departure valuation, calculation and portfolio schedule together, report required annual information and review later disposals or other events against the outstanding balance.

If you return to Denmark, the opening share value can be adjusted for the remaining deferred tax. A fresh arrival-market-value calculation without the old departure file can therefore be wrong. Plan who will maintain the records after the move and how they will receive official correspondence.

A workable departure sequence

The time allocated to each stage depends on assets, the destination and housing arrangements. Start before a business sale or new-country arrival makes the dates difficult to change.

Choose a destination the business and family can use

A low headline tax rate is only useful if the family can obtain suitable rights and the business can operate and bank there. Compare taxation of future salary, dividends and gains, opening asset values, treaty relief, payroll, payment providers and the real cost of maintaining the structure.

For an inquiry, bring the current group chart, approximate asset values, Danish residence history, proposed destination and any planned transaction. Offshore Capitalist can assess the international sequence and the implementation work needed; no tax saving follows automatically from leaving.
