When Denmark taxes your worldwide income
Start with the home and the actual move. Full liability can arise through residence in Denmark or a continuous stay of at least six months; it is not safely reduced to a universal 183-day test. A treaty can change the allocation where two countries claim residence. A residence permit, CPR registration and tax residence answer different questions.
Prepare an opening inventory of employment, business interests, foreign accounts, investments and property. Foreign withholding or a foreign company address does not by itself remove the Danish reporting question. The useful output is a dated residence conclusion and a schedule of income categories, treaty relief and reporting responsibilities.
The 2026 salary tax layers
The reform divides the higher national bands into middle, top and additional top tax. The rates below are incremental layers with different bases. They cannot simply be added and multiplied by gross salary: labour-market contribution, allowances, capital income and local taxes intervene.
For example, DKK 800,000 of personal income after labour-market contribution, with no relevant capital income, has DKK 158,800 above the middle threshold and DKK 22,100 above the top threshold. Those two layers are DKK 11,910 and DKK 1,657.50. This is only the higher-band calculation, not total income tax or take-home pay.
| Layer | 2026 rate / threshold | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Labour-market contribution (AM) | 8% | Ordinary covered employment income; from 2026 payable from the year the person turns 18. |
| Bottom national tax | 12.01% | Personal income plus positive net capital income, with the applicable personal allowance. |
| Middle national tax | 7.5% above DKK 641,200 | Personal-income threshold after AM; positive net capital income has a separate DKK 55,000 basic threshold. |
| Top national tax | Additional 7.5% above DKK 777,900 | Personal-income threshold after AM. |
| Additional top national tax | Additional 5% above DKK 2,592,700 | Personal-income threshold after AM. |
| Municipal / church | Location and membership dependent | Use the actual municipality and whether the person belongs to the Danish National Church. |
Allowances and local tax change the calculation
The 2026 general personal allowance is DKK 54,100. The employment deduction is 12.75% with a DKK 63,300 maximum; the job deduction is 4.5% of qualifying income above DKK 235,200, capped at DKK 3,100. These are not interchangeable: an employment deduction does not reduce every national tax base in the same way as it affects local taxable income.
Copenhagen illustrates the local layer: the official 2026 table gives 23.39% municipal income tax and 0.80% church tax for members. That is an example, not a national rate. A credible salary comparison also needs the municipality, pension contributions, deductions, tax-ceiling rules and any part-year treatment.
What happens to asset cost basis on arrival
Shares and securities within ABL §37 that first enter Danish taxing jurisdiction generally take market value at that date, while retaining their actual acquisition date. This is an asset-specific rule, not a blanket reset of all wealth.
Illustration only: shares bought for DKK 100,000, worth DKK 300,000 when first entering Danish tax scope, then sold for DKK 350,000 produce a DKK 50,000 Danish gain before costs, currency effects and other-country rules.
Record quantities, ownership, acquisition history and a defensible market value on the correct entry date. For an unlisted business this may require a valuation supported by financial statements and the rights attached to each share class. Keep the outgoing-country computation alongside it: the two countries may recognise different events and bases.
- Assets already within Danish tax jurisdiction do not acquire a fresh basis merely because their owner moves.
- Returning emigrants with a Danish deferred exit-tax balance can require a downward adjustment under special rules.
- Foreign property, pensions, crypto, business assets and entity interests outside the relevant share rules need their own classification and valuation analysis.
- An arrival valuation can be lower than historical cost; the rule is not an elective upward-only revaluation.
| Asset / circumstance | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Covered ordinary shares newly entering Danish tax scope | Arrival fair market value under ABL §37; actual acquisition date retained. |
| Shares already subject to Danish tax | No assumption of a new basis; check the existing taxing right. |
| Return after Danish share exit-tax deferral | Apply returning-taxpayer adjustments; do not use an unadjusted market value automatically. |
| Other assets | No general step-up conclusion established by this share-specific rule. |
The researcher and highly paid employee option
The special employment scheme can tax qualifying remuneration at 27% after 8% AM, an effective 32.84%, for up to seven years. The 2026 highly paid employee salary test is DKK 65,400 per month of qualifying remuneration. Researchers have a separate approval route; the salary figure alone does not decide their eligibility.
Prior Danish tax liability, the employer, timing of recruitment, remuneration components and continuing conditions must be checked before payroll is designed. Ordinary deductions do not apply to scheme remuneration, and other income remains subject to its own rules. Registration is not a guarantee that SKAT will accept the conditions. A founder cannot infer eligibility simply by paying themself the headline salary.
Owning a foreign company while living in Denmark
A controlling individual can be taxed on income of a foreign company under LL §16H. Ordinary tests include more than 50% capital/votes with related-person aggregation, CFC income exceeding half of taxable income and foreign tax below three quarters of the corresponding Danish tax; special preferential-regime conditions also require review. These differ from corporate CFC tests.
There are at least three separate questions: whether the company itself is managed from Denmark, whether activity creates a Danish permanent establishment, and whether an attribution rule taxes its Danish owner without a distribution. Analyse them independently. A foreign director or retained profit does not answer all three.
A later departure can trigger tax without a sale
Covered shares with a total market value of at least DKK 100,000 can enter the departure-tax rules when Danish taxing rights end. The threshold concerns portfolio value, not the gain. The ordinary look-back is Danish tax liability for at least seven of the preceding ten years, with exceptions including some inherited or transferred tax positions.
Deferral may preserve cash but does not eliminate the liability or reporting. Security requirements, investment-company shares taxed annually and a later return need separate analysis. Keep a calendar of annual obligations and transactions affecting the deferred balance instead of treating departure as the end of Danish administration.
Build a reviewable tax file
A useful first review combines the immigration route, Danish arrival date, previous home, family location, employment and ownership chart. Add account statements, acquisition costs, arrival valuations, pension terms and any planned sale or distribution. These details let advisers test alternatives before a contract, move or disposal fixes the result.
Use the preliminary tax assessment to establish withholding, then reconcile the final assessment with actual income and foreign items. Retain a record of assumptions that could change, such as a spouse moving later, a new directorship or a large share sale. The aim is a plan that still makes sense when the facts are checked.
