City at a glance

A capital city with several very different everyday routines

Vilnius works particularly well as a shortlist candidate when you want the capital’s employment, cultural and international-service network without choosing a very large metropolis. The Old Town is one version of the city; office districts north of the Neris, family neighbourhoods and outlying apartment areas create quite different commutes.

Go Vilnius reports 607,667 city residents for 2025. That is the city figure, not a metropolitan population. Lithuanian is the language to plan for in administration and local schooling; an English-speaking professional workplace does not mean every landlord, healthcare appointment or public service operates in English.

What may appeal

  • Capital-city work and cultural network.
  • Several distinct neighbourhood choices with public transport.
  • Official newcomer assistance.

What to weigh up

  • International-school choice can narrow the housing search.
  • Winter bills and older-building condition need inspection.
  • English at work does not settle every administrative interaction.

Cost of living

Build the budget from an actual home

A newly advertised two-room apartment on Daugėliškio Street in Šnipiškės was offered at EUR 850 a month for 55 m² when checked on 14 October 2026. This is one asking price for a new tenancy in a 2015 building, not the city average. Furniture, utilities and final contract terms were not established from the retrieved listing, so the price is not an all-inclusive household budget.

For two adults using full-price JUDU 30-day passes, public transport adds EUR 76 for the pair at the checked tariff. Groceries, heating, electricity, internet, healthcare, school fees and discretionary spending must be added. Ask for the previous winter’s actual bills; a cheaper advertised rent can conceal a more expensive building to heat. Keep deposit, first rent, agent charges and temporary accommodation outside the recurring total.

Neighbourhoods & finding a home

Compare neighbourhoods before comparing apartment photographs

Use the Aruodas city filters for both long-term rentals and purchases. Record the exact street, building age, heating method, room layout and lease term. A two-room listing normally describes total rooms, so check the floor plan rather than assuming two bedrooms. Verify who may let the property and agree the inventory, deposit return and exit conditions in writing.

Walk between the proposed home, the actual school and the stop you will use in winter. For a purchase, obtain independent title and building-document review, planned-works information and a total ownership budget; an attractive listing does not settle those questions.

Work, business & opportunities

Start with the employer or client geography

Fintech, technology and life sciences feature prominently in the city’s development-agency material. The relevant opportunity is an actual role or client base with the required language, skills and work permission. International firms and growing local companies coexist with a domestic labour market where Lithuanian may be necessary.

International House Vilnius is a practical first stop for official newcomer consultations. For an entrepreneur, identify whether the home, office and employees create Lithuanian company or permanent-establishment obligations. Remote customers do not remove the tax consequences of working from Vilnius.

Schools & childcare

Choose language and placement before the lease

Vilnius municipal admissions use the city education system, with the main application period described as 1 March–31 May; mid-year placement depends on vacancies. Prepare identity/residence evidence and the child’s school history. Check the actual catchment and special-programme admission requirements instead of treating a central address as a school guarantee.

English or French private options can be appropriate for a mobile family, but obtain a current written fee schedule, language-support assessment and seat offer. Public education avoids private tuition but still has practical supply and activity costs. A child who needs specialist support should have that support confirmed before the household chooses its daily commute.

Healthcare

Confirm insurance entitlement and a local provider

Lithuanian compulsory health insurance depends on the person’s status and insured category; a temporary residence card alone does not cover every accompanying family member. Confirm eligibility with the National Health Insurance Fund and then identify a contracted primary-care practice that can register you.

Keep the clinic’s language, appointment access, referral arrangements and private-payment alternatives in the housing comparison. For an urgent emergency use 112; the city’s official practical page also lists out-of-hours pharmacies. Check the current opening hours before travelling for medication.

Getting around

Use the current ticket and the actual weekday journey

At the checked full-price tariff, JUDU lists EUR 1 for 30 minutes, EUR 1.25 for 60 minutes and EUR 38 for a 30-day all-days pass. Activate the correct ticket and understand transfers; a stored ticket is not automatically a validated journey.

Compare the school run and office journey separately. A walkable centre is valuable, but the suitability of a suburban address depends on frequency, the last walk from the stop and evening return options. Use the live journey planner for a rainy weekday as well as for a weekend viewing.

Airports & international connections

Vilnius Airport is the main international gateway

VNO is the city’s principal passenger airport. Use the official airport/JUDU connections for the flight’s actual departure or arrival hour; early flights and late landings can need a different plan from a daytime viewing visit. Compare door-to-terminal time and baggage handling, not merely the distance shown on a map.

Kaunas can provide an alternative flight, but that is a separate intercity journey. A lower fare is only useful if it still works after the transfer, schedule and possible overnight stay. International routes and frequencies change seasonally.

Heating and winter daylight belong in the housing decision

Official 1991–2020 Vilnius normals show a January mean daily high of −1.5°C and low of −6°C, compared with 23.8°C and 13.6°C in July. The figures describe the weather station and averaging period, not a forecast or an indoor-comfort guarantee.

Inspect ventilation, heating controls, window condition and the winter walking route. A bright summer apartment can feel very different during the darker months. Summer rain is also part of the climate; balcony and roof condition deserve attention as well as insulation.

Safety & everyday risks

Treat street comfort and measured crime as different questions

The city’s official visitor guidance highlights pickpocket awareness and checking taxi prices. Those are useful actions; they do not establish a neighbourhood crime ranking. No comparable recent district-level crime series has been verified for this guide.

Visit the exact entrance and return route after dark, check smoke alarms and locks, and verify an apartment before transferring money. Use 112 for an emergency. A neighbourhood reputation in a forum should not replace inspecting the actual home and its surroundings.

Public services & practical setup

Use newcomer assistance to get the sequence right

International House Vilnius brings together practical newcomer guidance. Use it to identify the right authority for address, immigration and tax questions; one registration does not automatically complete all the others.

At handover, photograph meter readings and identify who bills for heating, water, electricity, waste and internet. Ask whether the landlord has to cooperate with address registration and record that before signing. Keep digital and paper copies of the lease and household civil documents for later applications.

Culture, community & daily life

Make room for the city beyond work

A central home makes it easier to return repeatedly to the Old Town, museums and performance venues instead of fitting them into a tourist weekend. A greener neighbourhood can make daily outdoor time easier. The best choice is the version you will use during a normal working month.

Test the immediate area for cafés, groceries, a library or community activity and a place to exercise through winter. Language study can improve everyday access even when work is entirely in English.

What residents say

What the rental discussion helps you notice

In a public Vilnius housing discussion, a person preparing to leave student accommodation asked about a EUR 350–500 budget. Respondents described the difficulty of finding a separate small home at that level and the extra cash needed at move-in. This is an anecdote about a constrained search, not evidence of a citywide rent range.

Another recurring suggestion was to use a dedicated property portal and compare actual adverts. The practical lesson is to distinguish a room, a studio and a self-contained apartment, and to prepare the upfront amount separately. These comments are not verified identities or client experiences.

Respondents to a student’s rental-search question highlighted the gap between an advertised monthly budget and the full upfront amount, and suggested checking dedicated property listings.

Planning your move

Plan the move around the decisions that depend on each other

Before choosing a permanent home in Vilnius, settle the applicable right to reside and work, shortlist a school if needed and price health cover. A property purchase or lease is not a substitute for immigration permission. Keep the move date consistent across the employment, housing and tax plan.

Use the first visits to repeat actual weekday journeys, inspect the home in daylight and at night, and collect written answers from the school, clinic and landlord. After arrival, complete the applicable address and tax registrations, activate utilities and keep a record of time spent in each country.

StageWhat to prepareMain dependency
Before committingIdentity and civil-status records; residence/work route; school reports; health-cover evidence.Do not pay a non-refundable housing or tuition amount on the assumption that permission will follow.
