City at a glance

An alternative to the capital with its own economy

Kaunas sits at the meeting of the Nemunas and Neris and has its own universities, industry and cultural life. It is a useful comparison for someone who wants an urban base with a more compact central routine rather than selecting it only as a cheaper substitute for Vilnius.

Kaunas IN gives a 2025 city population of 303,978. This guide concerns the city, not the surrounding Kaunas District Municipality. A home outside the city boundary can change school and municipal arrangements even when the postal address sounds close.

What may appeal

  • Own university, industry and cultural ecosystem.
  • Compact central routine and river recreation.
  • International airport plus an alternative through Vilnius.

What to weigh up

  • The best airport depends on the actual flight network.
  • City/district boundaries affect services.
  • Older housing and winter costs need address-specific checks.

Cost of living

Compare recurring bills and the cash needed to move

The KVT full-price monthly accumulating transport ticket is EUR 28. Two ordinary adult users therefore have a EUR 56 calendar-month public-transport scenario, before intercity trips or taxis. That clear cost should be kept separate from an unverified whole-household estimate.

Use current Aruodas rental adverts to build a matched shortlist: same room count, usable area, furnishing, heating and lease term. Older central and newer homes have different building charges. Ask for summer and winter bills and price internet, electricity, groceries and insurance for your own household. Deposits, any agent fee, furniture and temporary housing are initial costs.

Neighbourhoods & finding a home

Start with the city centre, then test the hills and bridges

Aruodas has separate Kaunas rental and purchase searches. Use the map and actual address so a city apartment is not silently compared with a home in the wider district. Inspect the ownership or letting authority, written lease, inventory, utility arrangement and planned work on the building.

For a family, the school catchment map should be beside the housing map. For an employee outside the centre, make the workplace trip at the required time; a pleasant central walking routine will not necessarily solve an industrial-area commute.

Work, business & opportunities

A university and industrial city

Kaunas IN presents an economy built around industry, technology and education, rather than only visitor services. Check employer sites and qualifications for your particular occupation. A technical role may have a different language requirement from a customer-facing local job.

Place the campus, hospital, factory or office on the housing shortlist before committing. Entrepreneurs should also consider the operating company, payroll and tax treatment of work done locally; a Lithuanian registration alone does not resolve a cross-border structure.

Schools & childcare

Use the city’s admissions system and catchment map

The municipality’s education guidance identifies a main 15 March–31 May application period and an electronic admissions system. Check the current year, grade and remaining places before assuming that a mid-year arrival can follow the ordinary timetable.

Ask the proposed school about Lithuanian-language support, previous-school documents, meals, after-school supervision and specialist needs. City and district provision must be checked separately. A private or international programme requires its own current fee and admission offer; no unverified fee average is used here.

Healthcare

Match insurance, referral and local availability

Kauno Klinikos is a major local clinical institution, but its presence does not mean every newcomer can obtain every appointment free or immediately. Its paid-services guidance distinguishes patients who pay from services covered through insurance or institutional arrangements.

First establish national insurance entitlement, then register a primary-care provider and confirm referral and language arrangements. Transfer prescriptions and relevant medical records before moving; a private consultation and public reimbursement are different payment paths.

Getting around

A low single fare still needs correct validation

KVT lists an ordinary electronic single ticket at EUR 0.70 with one transfer within 30 minutes; validate again on the connecting vehicle. The Žiogas/calendar-month accumulating cap is EUR 28. Buying from the driver or using the separately described contactless single-ticket method costs EUR 1.50 and does not provide the same transfer right.

The distinction matters for a newcomer who taps a bank card and assumes the app’s rules apply. Plan the route with the operator, and test the final walk, hills and crossings. A home can support a car-light routine without every job or school journey being equally convenient.

Airports & international connections

Kaunas Airport is useful when its routes fit your travel

Kaunas Airport (KUN) has international passenger services; the official FAQ identifies bus 29 G between the airport and the railway station. Check the timetable for the actual flight. There is no reason to budget a rail-airport connection merely because the bus terminates at the city’s station.

Vilnius Airport is a separate alternative when its airline network better matches your destination. Compare the complete journey before choosing a city on the assumption that every regular international trip can leave from KUN.

Kaunas station · 1991–2020 averages

January average daily highs/lows are -0.8°C / -5.5°C; July averages are 24°C / 13.5°C. Expect a pronounced heating season and warmer summers, with precipitation throughout the year. These are averages, not temperature extremes or a forecast.

The national service publishes a Kaunas station series. These period averages do not resolve neighbourhood exposure, urban heat, insulation or indoor conditions.

Inspect for the cold months as well as the summer

Kaunas station’s 1991–2020 normals give January daily highs/lows of −0.8°C/−5.5°C and July 24°C/13.5°C. Annual precipitation in that series is 651 mm. Monthly averages do not show the coldest day, so heating reliability and safe winter access still matter.

Check roof and window condition, ventilation, a place for wet clothing and the cost of heating the actual flat. The river setting also makes the property’s exact elevation and any local flood assessment more useful than a general city climate description.

Safety & everyday risks

Building safety deserves its own inspection

The municipality’s seasonal fire-safety guidance makes heating equipment and smoke detection relevant checks for older housing. Ask who maintains the boiler, chimney and shared areas, and document defects at handover.

No district crime league table is asserted here. Inspect the entrance, evening walking route and cycle storage; verify adverts and payment recipients before sending a deposit. Opinions that a city feels quiet or lively do not measure the likelihood of a specific crime.

Public services & practical setup

Know which municipality serves the address

Kaunas changed its municipal waste arrangements in 2026, including clearer charging components. Ask the landlord or building manager what is included in service charges and what the household must arrange directly.

Keep signed meter readings and request the actual providers for water, heating, electricity and internet. Use the city education contacts for school questions, and verify the authority for any address outside the city boundary. One word on a property listing is not enough to identify the correct services.

Culture, community & daily life

Build a routine around the centre and river landscape

The meeting of two rivers, the Old Town and the central cultural district give Kaunas an identity beyond its work market. A household can compare a central walking base with a home closer to green space and campuses.

Include the places you would return to in winter: a performance venue, library, sports facility or community group. A smaller urban scale may make familiar routines easier, while someone seeking the capital’s range of events may feel the trade-off differently.

What residents say

Residents disagree about compactness and connections

In a public discussion, u/progmakerlt, describing themselves as local, valued access to city services at a manageable scale but said traffic had become worse. u/RemarkableAutism, who reported living there for a year, liked the convenience of nearby places.

u/Sea_Conversation7030 appreciated the greenery and walkability but found that many of their own flights still required Vilnius. These accounts point to questions to test; they are not verified transport statistics or a representative satisfaction score.

Planning your move

Plan the move around the decisions that depend on each other

Before choosing a permanent home in Kaunas, settle the applicable right to reside and work, shortlist a school if needed and price health cover. A property purchase or lease is not a substitute for immigration permission. Keep the move date consistent across the employment, housing and tax plan.

Use the first visits to repeat actual weekday journeys, inspect the home in daylight and at night, and collect written answers from the school, clinic and landlord. After arrival, complete the applicable address and tax registrations, activate utilities and keep a record of time spent in each country.
