The move started with several connected questions

These clients were longstanding Canadian business owners who had also become crypto investors. They were interested in leaving Canada and wanted to understand where they could establish themselves, how departure might affect their assets and what would be required to support their intended tax-residence position.

The task crossed several disciplines at once. Choosing a place to live was connected to the treatment of existing wealth, the businesses, access to banking and the legal steps needed to settle elsewhere. An immigration application by itself could not answer all of those questions.

What the clients wanted to resolve

Michael described the clients’ objectives as finding an appropriate destination, examining how to optimise the departure-tax position, establishing genuine non-residence in Canada and residence elsewhere, and getting the practical arrangements in place.

The distinction between an objective and an achieved financial result matters. The clients wanted to avoid an unnecessarily expensive or poorly coordinated departure. We have not published a numerical saving, an asset valuation or the tax treatment of any particular holding.

DecisionWhy it had to be considered together
Leaving CanadaThe departure position depended on the clients’ actual circumstances and assets.
Choosing a destinationThe new location had to fit their personal, business and investment objectives.
Establishing the new positionImmigration permission and tax residence required separate attention.
Business and banking setupCompanies and accounts needed to support the agreed arrangements.
An additional residencyA further permission to reside could serve a different purpose from the principal move.

Departure planning comes before assumptions about arrival

Canadian emigration rules can deem certain property to be disposed of at market value even without an actual sale. There are important exceptions. The analysis therefore starts with what the person owns, how it is held and which departure provisions apply, rather than a single assumption about a portfolio.

For someone with crypto holdings, useful preparation includes the transaction history, acquisition records, custody arrangements and a consistent valuation approach. This is a general planning lesson from the circumstances described; the specific treatment and holdings in this client’s file have not been disclosed.

There is also a cash-flow question. An obligation calculated by reference to asset value is different from a tax paid from proceeds of a sale. A coordinated review needs to examine any relevant filing, payment or deferral rules before the move is treated as a completed decision.

Residence needs a factual foundation

Canada’s individual-residence guidance considers residential ties and the person’s wider circumstances; a foreign residence permit alone does not determine the Canadian result. A new home, travel pattern and continuing connections need to be examined together.

The arrival side asks a different set of questions. What gives each person permission to live there? What establishes tax residence? What work or business activity is permitted? Which registrations and records are needed? These questions can interact without having identical answers.

This helps explain why the assignment involved handholding through the departure and setup rather than simply sending the clients a list of attractive countries. The relevant plan had to be capable of being carried out in their actual lives.

What Offshore Capitalist helped put in place

The team undertook a detailed comparative analysis, examined the available options and helped the clients through leaving Canada and getting established abroad. Michael reported that the clients set themselves up in Cyprus, including company formation and bank-account assistance.

The engagement also included an additional residency in Panama. The account supplied for publication does not specify the permit category in either country, the date of the applications or any special tax election. It would be misleading to assign a current programme to the clients retrospectively.

Cyprus and Panama therefore appear here as the destinations involved in this client history, not as a standing recommendation for other Canadian owners or crypto investors. The right comparison for a new client starts again with their circumstances and current rules.

The sequence is part of the solution

In a comparable relocation, the work needs a sensible order. Asset and residence questions can affect the intended departure date. The residence route can affect when a family can establish a home. The proposed company activity can affect banking requirements. A delay in one workstream may require adjustments elsewhere.

The following sequence is a planning framework illustrated by the case. It is not a claim about the precise schedule followed by these clients, whose dates were not supplied.

StageDecision to resolve before moving on
Establish the starting positionMap owners, assets, existing businesses and residential ties.
Compare viable destinationsAssess immigration, tax, lifestyle and operating requirements together.
Plan departure and arrivalIdentify timing dependencies, documents and matters requiring local professional work.
Implement the selected arrangementsCoordinate residence applications, companies, accounts and the practical move.
Maintain the positionKeep track of presence, renewals, filings and changes in the business or family.

Why a second residency is a separate decision

An additional residency can create an option to spend time somewhere else or establish a future base. Its value depends on the rights granted and the conditions that must continue to be met. It is not automatically a second tax residence, nor does it erase obligations in the place where someone actually lives.

In this story, Panama was the additional residency after the Cyprus setup. For another family, the relevant questions might be whether the permission remains useful, how it is renewed and whether the presence requirements fit the family’s calendar. Accumulating documents without a clear purpose would not be the same achievement.

The result, and the lesson to carry forward

The confirmed implementation was a move out of Canada with a Cyprus setup, company and banking assistance, and an additional Panamanian residency. The published account does not claim a particular tax rate, an exit-tax saving or an authority’s endorsement of the entire arrangement.

The lesson is the connection between the decisions. The clients did not need isolated answers about a visa, a company and an account. They needed the departure, destination and practical setup to work together. That is the kind of engagement Offshore Capitalist is designed to coordinate.
