Who the White Card is designed for
The statutory route covers a third-country person with verified employment outside Hungary performed remotely using digital technology, or an ownership interest in a profitable foreign business whose work or management is performed remotely from Hungary. It does not authorise taking a Hungarian job or owning a Hungarian business. Other statutory category exclusions also apply, so foreign income alone is not sufficient.
OIF requires at least EUR 3,000 net monthly income for the six months before entry and continuing resources at that level during the stay. Prepare evidence of the employment or profitable foreign business, the income and its receipt. A large account balance without the required income history should not be assumed to replace the test.
A temporary working arrangement with important tradeoffs
The card can be issued for up to one year and extended once for up to one further year for the same purpose. Ordinary family reunification is unavailable; the narrow exception concerning a child born in Hungary is not a general spouse or existing-child route. A family may need another principal route or independently qualifying applications.
White Card holders cannot obtain the national residence card through this status, and the law restricts applying for another residence purpose inside Hungary during or after the card’s validity. Treat the end of the permitted period as a real planning event. For renewal, OIF also specifies a valid permit and at least 90 days’ Hungarian stay in the relevant preceding 180-day period.
| Issue | Planning consequence |
|---|---|
| Foreign work and company evidence | Verify the actual contract, remote arrangements and company profitability |
| EUR 3,000 net monthly history | Keep six months’ credible income/payment evidence before entry |
| Family sponsorship restriction | Assess each relative separately before moving |
| Maximum one renewal | Plan onward status or departure rather than assume indefinite renewal |
| Tax and employer compliance | Residence permission does not grant a tax or payroll exemption |
Remote work is still work performed somewhere
The White Card does not create a special foreign-income exemption in the personal tax rules. Residence, income source, treaty relief and the applicable insurance system need a separate review. A foreign employer may have registration or payroll duties, and an owner managing a foreign company from Hungary can create corporate residence or permanent-establishment questions.
Before applying, make sure the work description in the immigration file is consistent with the company’s tax position. We can help assess that interaction and coordinate the agreed application preparation. We do not promise card approval or that a foreign company’s profits remain outside Hungarian taxation simply because it was incorporated elsewhere.
