The process, step by step
This is a dependency-based planning sequence, not a promised processing timetable. Each permit page identifies its own authority periods and exclusions.
01Establish the household and work routeBefore contracts and relocation dates are fixed
Map each person’s nationality, work, dependency and current status; select a route that supports the whole household.
Documents & evidence
- Passports
- Marriage/partnership and child records
- Work and business description
- Assuming a remote-worker card sponsors a spouse
- Confusing executive duties with all local work
02Review tax, assets and employer obligationsBefore changing where work and management take place
Document departure and arrival consequences, investment basis and the applicable social-insurance system.
Documents & evidence
- Residence chronology
- Asset acquisition ledger
- Company accounts and decision map
- Treating the permit as a tax exemption
- Missing foreign-employer registration
03Prepare housing and the application fileBefore the route-specific filing deadline
Obtain accepted accommodation and insurance evidence, translations and the correct application channel.
Documents & evidence
- Housing evidence
- Insurance
- Route-specific employer/business/funding evidence
- A lease unusable for the required procedure
- An in-country application prohibited by the current status
04Complete entry, attendance and registrationsAfter the correct legal filing/approval step
Follow the applicable entry and biometric procedure and arrange local administrative identifiers and family setup.
Documents & evidence
- Decision or visa where required
- Original documents
- Address and employer records
- Assuming online submission removes personal attendance
- Using a card before work is authorised
05Operate and renew coherentlyThroughout the first year and ahead of expiry
Retain evidence of the approved activity, report changes and reconcile worldwide income and filings.
Documents & evidence
- Income statements
- Travel record
- Business and tax calendar
- Waiting until expiry to prepare renewal
- Ignoring foreign income missing from a tax draft
Check the route before committing to the move
Begin with citizenship and the work you actually intend to perform. EU/EEA and Swiss nationals generally use a registration framework, whereas a third-country applicant needs an appropriate permit category. A White Card may fit a foreign remote job but not local trading, while a company-director route does not automatically authorise all operational work. A company share purchase is not a substitute for residence permission.
Build the household plan at the same time. Check whether a spouse, registered partner, child or dependent parent can join under the proposed sponsor category, whether they may work, and what evidence is needed. A school start date or expiring lease can make a route with restricted family sponsorship impractical even when the principal applicant qualifies.
Prepare both sides of the tax transition
Prepare a dated residence file covering existing homes, family location, travel, work and directorships. Hungarian domestic residence can arise through several tests, and the departure country may continue to claim residence or impose its own exit charge. Establish the treaty position rather than assuming a new card or a 183-day calendar resolves the matter.
Bring portfolio acquisition records, pension terms, company accounts and existing tax advice. For ordinary cash-purchased private shares, no automatic Hungarian arrival-value reset is established in this research. The timing of a dividend, sale, option exercise or business transfer may therefore affect two countries. A foreign employer also needs to review Hungarian payroll and social-insurance duties, and the company needs a management/establishment analysis if the owner starts directing it from Hungary.
Choose accommodation that supports the application
Ask the landlord or accommodation provider what evidence they can supply for the relevant immigration and address procedure before paying a long non-refundable commitment. Check the property identity, permitted occupants, contract term, utilities, deposit conditions and termination provisions. Keep signed documents and payment evidence in a form that can be translated or submitted if required.
An address notification, residence permit, tax number and social-insurance identifier serve different purposes. Plan their dependencies with the relevant authority and employer. For free-movement applicants, OIF states that residence exceeding three months should be notified no later than the 93rd day after entry. Third-country applications have route-specific filing locations, lawful-stay conditions and in-country switching restrictions.
| Workstream | Useful evidence | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Valid lease/ownership or accepted housing evidence | Tax residence or permission to work by itself |
| Immigration | Passport, route evidence and complete application | An income-tax exemption |
| Payroll / insurance | Employment terms and applicable-system evidence | Automatic coverage of every family member |
| Tax onboarding | Identifiers, income records and residence analysis | That foreign broker data is already reported correctly |
| Bank account | Identity, address, tax residences and source of funds | Guaranteed approval from company registration alone |
Arrange coverage and education before arrival
Check the insurance basis for each family member. Employment insurance, EU coordination, an applicable S1/A1 document and private medical insurance are different arrangements. A Hungarian health-service payment available to certain uninsured domestic persons is not a general instant-access policy for every new arrival. Immigration evidence of coverage and actual access to the providers your household needs should both be confirmed.
For children, ask the relevant school or authority about enrolment, language support, previous records, vaccinations and any translation requirements. International-school availability and fees need a current school-specific quotation. Do not sign a lease on the assumption that a nearby school automatically offers a place or the required language programme.
Keep the first year organised
Set up a shared calendar for permit validity, mandatory reports, payroll, VAT, company accounts and the personal annual return. Keep electronic access and authorised representatives functioning while travelling. Remote workers should preserve proof that their foreign employment and income still satisfy their card; guest self-employed holders have ongoing reporting obligations as well as renewal conditions.
We can help turn the chosen route into an implementation plan with named responsibilities and a document checklist. If the main unresolved issue is tax or corporate management, settle that analysis before making an immigration application describe a business arrangement that later has to change.
