The job, qualifications and salary must all fit
The EU Blue Card is for qualifying highly skilled employment, not simply a business owner paying themselves a salary. The contract or preliminary agreement must cover at least six months, and the applicant must establish the required higher qualifications or the applicable recognised professional-experience route. Certain ICT cases use qualifying experience acquired within the prescribed period; regulated professions can require recognition.
For 2026, OIF states a general minimum gross monthly remuneration of HUF 1,001,048. The lower HUF 800,838 threshold applies only to the specified healthcare occupations. The authority states that the 2026 amounts also matter to existing valid holders and relevant pending cases; do not assume the figure is fixed forever at the application-year level.
| 2026 question | Evidence or rule |
|---|---|
| General salary threshold | Gross monthly HUF 1,001,048 |
| Specified healthcare occupations | Gross monthly HUF 800,838; confirm the exact occupation |
| Employment period | At least 6 months in the qualifying contract/preliminary agreement |
| Skills | Accepted qualification or applicable professional-experience evidence |
| Regulated role | Recognition/licensing where required, separate from immigration approval |
Changing the job can change the permission
The card can have validity of up to four years and can be extended under the applicable conditions. The permitted job and employer are not incidental: the first-year employment restrictions and later change/extension procedures must be followed. A new job title, employer or salary arrangement should be checked before the change is implemented.
An EU Blue Card from another member state can support a mobility procedure only under its actual conditions. It is not unrestricted permission to start work anywhere in the EU immediately. Hungary’s application, qualification and remuneration requirements still need review. The ordinary merits period stated by OIF is 70 days, with different rules for specified mobility cases and excluded additional-document time.
Include the family and long-term plan
A qualifying Blue Card holder can be a sponsor under the relevant family framework, with separate applications and evidence. OIF’s national definition includes a qualifying spouse or registered partner and eligible minor children, with custody and dependency requirements. The principal’s work permission should not be assumed to give every relative identical rights without checking their own status.
The EU residence-card framework includes a special accumulation route involving at least two continuous years in Hungary and the prescribed five-year qualifying EU history. Which prior statuses and periods count must be checked. Citizenship then has a separate statutory residence clock and language conditions. The two processes should not be collapsed into a promise of a passport after a fixed number of Blue Card renewals.
Salary eligibility is not take-home pay
The immigration threshold is a gross-remuneration condition. Ordinary Hungarian PIT and social contributions can materially reduce the employee’s net pay, while employer social tax increases the company’s cost. Family reliefs and international insurance can change the calculation but must be established rather than presumed.
We can help coordinate the immigration and cross-border planning and identify the local payroll support required for implementation. The employer should confirm the real job, work location and contract before an application is prepared; a paper salary that is not actually paid does not provide a sound residence plan.
