Put the tax review before the residence trigger
Compile the date of prior New Zealand residence, travel plans and any permanent place of abode. Transitional-resident eligibility depends on history and conditions, not merely being granted a new visa. Identify foreign companies, trusts, funds and financial arrangements before establishing a home.
Match investments to both risk and immigration rules
For Active Investor Plus, confirm which investments are acceptable in the selected category and document the lawful source and transfer of nominated funds. Approval in principle precedes a time-limited investment step. Do not assume that any property purchase or any managed fund qualifies.
Make the longer-term plan explicit
Map the expiry of transitional relief, investment evidence deadlines and family entry requirements. If citizenship is an objective, compare its substantial presence requirements with the much lower investor-visa minimum. A household can comply with an investor visa while still being far from citizenship eligibility. Review business decisions made from New Zealand as a separate corporate-residence issue.
Prepare the investor file before transferring capital
For Active Investor Plus, select Growth or Balanced using the actual investment and residence objectives. Prepare the applicant’s identity, family, health and character evidence and the lawful-source file for the nominated funds. Identify who legally owns each asset and document any sale or transfer needed to make the investment. A relative’s money or a company’s cash should not be treated as the applicant’s personal funds without reviewing the permitted route.
Approval in principle is followed by a time-limited investment stage; INZ’s current framework generally provides six months, with a possible extension where the conditions are met. Preserve the bank trail and use acceptable investments. Do not assume every fund or property qualifies, and check the managed-fund requirements effective from 28 September 2026.
Complete the tax inventory before creating the new home
Review prior New Zealand residence over at least ten years and determine whether transitional relief is available. Catalogue foreign companies, trusts, funds, pensions, debts, bank accounts and deferred remuneration. Obtain documents supporting acquisition costs, income history and valuations while they remain accessible. The individual’s residence can be affected by a permanent place of abode as well as day counts.
An owner who starts directing a foreign business from New Zealand should assess company residence separately. Identify which directors actually control the entity and where day-to-day group management occurs. If the company remains foreign, assess CFC or FIF consequences for the owner and the effect of transitional status. The immigration investment does not resolve these issues.
Create three calendars after approval
The first calendar tracks investment deployment, evidence checkpoints and the period the funds must remain invested. The second tracks physical presence for the selected visa category. The third tracks tax residence, returns and expiry of transitional relief. If citizenship is an objective, add its separate five-year presence calculation rather than borrowing the investor minimum.
Review family permissions and school, housing and healthcare arrangements against the actual grant. Maintain bank access and documentary evidence of the investment throughout the period. An approved investment may change, mature or cease to qualify, so establish who monitors compliance and how a replacement would be handled. A published processing statistic is not a substitute for sufficient time to resolve a complex wealth history or an investment due-diligence issue.
