Meet both limbs of the departure test
IRD explains that becoming nonresident requires absence for more than 325 days in a 12-month period and no permanent place of abode in New Zealand. The home connection is therefore material even when the travel threshold is satisfied. The effective date and any treaty position need a careful chronology.
Review investments and financial arrangements
IRD warns that changing residence can affect FIF investments and financial arrangements such as foreign-currency accounts, loans and government stock. A base price adjustment can be required. Transitional residents have specific exceptions. A country without a general capital-gains tax can still have departure-related calculations for particular assets.
Companies and ongoing income have their own rules
Personal nonresidence does not move a New Zealand-incorporated company abroad. Corporate migration and distributions can have separate consequences. Retained New Zealand-source income may continue to require returns or withholding. Keep evidence of the new home, asset values, past exemption dates and who remains responsible for filings after departure.
Meet both the absence and home conditions
IRD explains that nonresidence generally requires both no permanent place of abode in New Zealand and absence for more than 325 days in a twelve-month period. A person who keeps an enduring home connection should not assume the travel count alone ends residence. Conversely, the effective date can depend on the completed absence period, so record the chronology carefully.
Gather evidence of the overseas home, work and family arrangements and the status of any New Zealand accommodation. Update institutions with the position that follows from the facts, not merely the date of the flight. Retained New Zealand income and the applicable treaty can still create reporting and withholding obligations after nonresidence.
Review financial arrangements before residence ends
IRD specifically warns that foreign-currency accounts, loans and government stock can require a base-price adjustment on departure. The calculation can recognise currency-related amounts that are easy to miss if the owner thinks only in the asset’s original currency. Assemble the complete history of money advanced, repaid, received and previously returned for tax.
There is a specific exception described for qualifying cash-basis transitional residents who held the arrangement on arrival and departure and leave within the relevant statutory period. It is not a universal exception for anyone who has lived in New Zealand for fewer than four years. Check the exact residence dates, status and arrangement. Foreign investment funds and other investments need a separate departure review.
Personal departure does not migrate the company or end visa conditions
A New Zealand-incorporated company does not cease residence merely because its owner moves. A foreign-incorporated company may remain resident through local management or director control. Decide which operations continue and document any genuine transfer of functions and authority. Corporate migration, distributions and retained assets need their own analysis.
If you hold Active Investor Plus residence, continue meeting investment and evidence commitments unless the authority has confirmed a change or release. Tax nonresidence and immigration compliance are different questions. Arrange a local contact for tax notices, keep records and review any effect on Working for Families, student loans or other programmes. Before arriving in the next country, establish how it will treat retained companies, investments and any future distributions.
