Residence is one route among several
SRE’s ordinary residence route requires at least five years of qualifying residence immediately before the application. The official guidance distinguishes temporary and permanent residence from the temporary-student category, which does not create the same residence entitlement for naturalisation.
Other routes exist for circumstances including marriage, Mexican children, certain regional origins and other statutory grounds. A shorter route should only be used where the applicant meets its actual requirements. Buying property or obtaining a residence card is not a direct citizenship-by-investment programme.
Build the record while living there
Keep residence cards, travel records, civil documents and evidence that explains the continuity of the qualifying period. Check the permitted absences and the route-specific test before planning long stays abroad.
SRE requires current documents at filing. Its procedure highlights remaining validity on the residence card, passport and background certificates. An otherwise eligible applicant can lose time when records expire before the appointment.
The application process
Applicants use the official pre-registration and appointment system and attend personally. The chosen location handles the procedure, and a representative cannot simply replace the applicant at the required appointment. Family or minor cases have additional attendance rules.
The file is reviewed before the required examinations and biometrics. The official guidance covers Mexican history and culture and Spanish-language assessment, including specified exemptions from parts of the testing. Use the current SRE study material and requirements rather than an old third-party question bank.
Costs and timing
Budget the current government charge, document procurement, authentication, translation and any assistance separately. The qualifying five-year period is not an administrative completion estimate. Appointment capacity, a complete valid file, examinations and government review affect the timeline.
SRE lists several distinct naturalisation routes; each needs a current checklist. The consequences for existing nationalities and the obligations attached to naturalised status also deserve review before applying.
Connect citizenship with the wider plan
Citizenship can offer a durable connection to a country where a family actually lives. It does not replace tax-residence analysis or remove obligations in another jurisdiction. We can help coordinate the residence strategy and the cross-border questions while the appropriate local process establishes eligibility.
Document validity can determine whether the file is accepted
SRE’s procedure requires at least six months remaining on a temporary-residence card and at least forty-five working days on the passport or qualifying travel document. The federal criminal-record certificate must be within three months of issue; local-certificate validity follows the issuing authority or the stated three-month fallback.
The applicant attends personally with DNN3 and the required duplicate file. A deficient or expired document can mean arranging a new appointment, so coordinate certificate ordering with the appointment rather than collecting everything years before eligibility. The five-year residence route excludes relying on the temporary-student category.
Prepare for the actual examination format
The history-and-culture test has ten questions, requires eight correct answers and lasts at most ten minutes. The Spanish assessment includes an interview, reading and writing; it requires the stated passing result and a satisfactory interview. SRE lists exemptions from history and culture for specified categories, including people over sixty, but still requires Spanish.
Two attempts are available. After a first failed examination, the procedure describes a second appointment after fifteen working days; failing the second means waiting a year and making a new paid application. Missing the scheduled examination can also have consequences. Use current official study materials and prepare for the appointment seriously.
The legal processing clock follows a complete registered file
SRE states that the relevant periods begin after the complete application has been reviewed and the file generated in SINNA. Documents submitted at a regional module must reach the central office for that registration. Pre-registration, an appointment request and a complete registered case are therefore different dates.
No verified current universal end-to-end decision period is stated here. After the substantive procedure, an appointment is given to collect the naturalisation letter if granted. The letter and a later passport application are separate documents, and the responsibilities attached to naturalised nationality deserve review before completion.
