The 183-day and 60-day residence routes

Cyprus treats an individual as resident under the ordinary test where total presence exceeds 183 days in the tax year. Arrival counts as a Cyprus day and departure as an overseas day; arrival and departure on the same day counts in Cyprus, while the reverse sequence counts outside. Keep a travel ledger that follows these rules rather than counting hotel nights.

The Tax Department’s current 60-day guidance lists four cumulative conditions: at least 60 days in Cyprus, no stay exceeding 183 days in another single state, a qualifying business, employment or office in a Cyprus-resident company, and a permanent owned or rented home in Cyprus. Older summaries also list a separate prohibition on residence anywhere else; that wording should not be copied over the current guidance. Another country can still claim residence under its own law, making treaty analysis necessary.

Income tax changed for 2026

The 2026 personal bands are 0% on the first €22,000 of taxable income, 20% on €22,001–€32,000, 25% on €32,001–€42,000, 30% on €42,001–€72,000 and 35% above €72,000. These are marginal rates applied to taxable income, not a single rate on gross receipts. Deductions and the nature of the income must be established before estimating liability.

The reform also broadens filing obligations. Current official business guidance includes tax residents aged 25 through 70 even without income, alongside persons with relevant gross income. A zero tax bill is therefore not proof that no return is required. Returns from the 2026 tax year use Tax For All. Use the 2026 reform and registration guidance when older government information pages still display the former €19,500 threshold and bands.

Company taxation and the shareholder are separate

The corporate income-tax rate rose from 12.5% to 15% on 1 January 2026. Current Tax Department guidance treats management and control in Cyprus as a residence connection and also applies a Cyprus-incorporation rule, subject to a treaty providing otherwise. That treaty qualification is narrower than assuming any foreign residence claim automatically removes Cyprus residence.

A founder should document where the real decisions are made and who has authority, competence and information to make them. A service address or local director does not by itself establish substantive management. Personal non-dom treatment does not exempt company profits from corporation tax, payroll or other obligations. Analyse foreign operations, permanent establishments, related-party transactions and any applicable corporate anti-avoidance rules independently. The same group may need compliance in more than one country even when a Cyprus company is properly managed.

Non-dom concerns specified charges, not all income

Non-dom treatment is principally relevant to Special Defence Contribution on dividends and interest for qualifying resident individuals. It does not turn salary or business income into exempt investment income. Health-system contributions, foreign withholding and other charges need their own analysis. From 2026, the reform removes SDC on rental income, while ordinary income taxation of rent remains a separate matter.

The general deemed-domicile rule looks at residence in seventeen of the preceding twenty years. The current guidance also describes a paid alternative allowing eligible applicants two additional five-year exemption periods at €250,000 per period. Domicile of origin and the detailed statutory exceptions still matter, so nationality alone is not an adequate test. Prepare a residence history and establish the source and legal character of income before deciding how much benefit the treatment provides.
