Ordinary naturalisation requires actual qualifying residence

Under the current Ministry of Interior guidance, an adult generally needs twelve months of legal continuous residence immediately before applying, with aggregate absences up to ninety days not interrupting that final period. The preceding ten-year window must contain at least seven years of legal residence. The two components should be calculated separately from a complete travel record.

The applicant also needs good character, B1 Greek, knowledge of contemporary political and social conditions, suitable accommodation and stable regular means for the household. Holding permanent residence does not replace those conditions. A person visiting just enough to maintain an investment permission should not assume the same pattern produces a naturalisation entitlement. The qualifying years are not an estimate of the time the authority takes to decide a complete application.

The skilled-employment route has specific employer conditions

A modified route exists for qualifying highly skilled employees of eligible companies. The current guidance distinguishes three or four earlier years according to B1 or A2 Greek, in addition to the final twelve-month continuous-residence component. The company and employment must satisfy the official eligibility criteria, including at the relevant application and examination points. It is not enough to call a business international or to appoint the applicant as its director.

Before relying on this route, establish the employer category, the applicant’s actual skilled role and supporting employment history. The Ministry’s special provisions for absences must be applied to the relevant period and route. A spouse or family member needs their own eligibility assessment. Treat shortened residence requirements as a conditional statutory pathway, not as an investment-for-passport offer.

Build the evidence before choosing the filing date

Create a chronological schedule of permits, actual presence, absences, employers and addresses. Reconcile it against passports, entry records and official registration. Obtain the accepted Greek-language and civic-knowledge certificates, and check the exact certificate version and results the authority requires. Allow preparation time for examination dates, authenticated civil records and criminal-record documents.

Use the current M127 application and its document instructions. Housing and financial evidence should explain the real household situation, not simply show a balance on one day. A company-sponsored applicant should retain evidence of the qualifying employer and skilled position. Verify translations, certifications, document age limits and whether originals are required before lodging. This research does not verify a universal current actual processing estimate or an all-inclusive fee; obtain the live fee and procedure from the filing authority.

From application to nationality and passport

The practical sequence is eligibility and travel audit, language and civic qualification, document preparation, submission, authority examination and completion of any grant formalities. Keep legal residence valid while the file is under consideration and promptly report relevant changes. A change of employer can be material for an application relying on the special skilled-employment route.

Citizenship by descent, registration or marriage may provide a different legal basis for a particular family and should be checked before defaulting to residence naturalisation. The former investment citizenship programme should not be represented as open. After nationality is established, civil registration and passport issuance remain separate administrative steps. Cyprus citizenship provides EU nationality rights; it does not by itself decide where the holder is resident for tax or remove another citizenship’s continuing obligations.
