City at a glance

Choose a side of the river, then a neighbourhood

Riga combines the region’s main business and cultural centre with a varied residential city. The Old Town, the wider centre, left-bank neighbourhoods and outer districts create very different work and school journeys. Do not use a tourist walk through Vecrīga as a proxy for the whole city.

The city had 591,881 statistical residents in the 2025 comparison cited by Go Vilnius from Latvia’s official figures. This is not the larger metropolitan area or the declared-address register. Latvian is central to public administration and local education; confirm English availability for the particular workplace or service.

What may appeal

  • Broad business and cultural infrastructure.
  • Main international airport and urban public transport.
  • Different city neighbourhoods to fit different routines.

What to weigh up

  • River crossings change daily travel.
  • International-school fees can dominate a family budget.
  • Older-building charges need inspection.

Cost of living

Separate the everyday budget from international-school costs

The checked Riga full-price monthly transport ticket costs EUR 30, so two adult users add EUR 60 a month before regional trains, taxis or driving. Housing costs should be taken from a matched shortlist of current long-term properties, with heating and building charges identified separately.

For a family considering International School of Latvia in Piņķi, a new Grade 1–5 pupil’s published 2026/27 tuition, application, registration and capital charges total EUR 21,200 before bus, meals, activities or additional support. That is a school-specific scenario, not a cost every Riga family incurs. The bus fee currently published for Riga/Mežaparks and Jūrmala is EUR 2,400; earlier figures should not be reused.

Neighbourhoods & finding a home

Use the commute to narrow a broad housing market

RentInRiga offers rental and sale filters for named Riga districts; SS.com has a Riga apartment directory. An agency portal is one inventory, while classified adverts can mix private owners and agents. Confirm the agent’s role, the owner, the full annual lease term and each initial payment.

Ask for a winter service-charge statement, not just a warm-season estimate. Before purchasing, review title, building ownership/land arrangements, association obligations and planned works with a local professional. An advertised mortgage payment is not a rental price or a lending offer to a new arrival.

Work, business & opportunities

A service and business hub, not one universal labour market

The 2026 economic profile describes Riga’s business services, technology, transport and wider metropolitan economy. Select real vacancies and employers for the household’s skills; work in an international service business can have different language requirements from regulated or local-facing work.

For a business owner, compare the location of the operating team with housing and schools. Latvia’s retained-profit system does not eliminate personal salary tax or the consequences of managing a foreign business locally. Immigration work rights, payroll and company tax are separate checks.

Schools & childcare

School choice can move the housing search outside central Riga

For municipal schooling, contact the education authority and proposed school with the child’s age, language history and previous records. The official remigration guide advises families applying later in the season to check vacancies directly. Do not assume that a place remains available because a school is close to an apartment.

International School of Latvia is in Piņķi, outside Riga. Confirm the actual bus stop, support needs, curriculum and place before selecting a home around it. Its published fees exclude lunch, bus and extracurricular activity charges; additional educational support can create further costs.

Healthcare

Registration and the right to state-funded care are separate

Live Riga explains that eligible employed temporary residents can access the state system after the necessary registration. The National Health Service’s recipient rules govern the actual entitlement; accompanying family members must be checked separately.

Choose a family doctor who can accept you and ask about language, referrals and waiting times. Private English-language consultations can be a practical alternative, but paying privately and receiving state reimbursement are not the same thing. Transfer essential records and prescriptions before the move.

Getting around

A 90-minute ticket does not cover every journey in the region

Rīgas satiksme lists an ordinary 90-minute ticket at EUR 1.50 and a monthly ticket at EUR 30. Follow activation and revalidation instructions when changing vehicles. Regional trains, school buses and special onboard sales can have separate fare rules.

The river crossing is often more important than the distance to the centre. Test your actual office and school commute at the required hour; late-night and weekend services can change the value of a particular home.

Airports & international connections

Riga Airport serves both Riga and nearby Jūrmala

RIX is the principal international passenger gateway for the city and surrounding area. The airport’s ground-transport information includes bus 22. Check its current schedule and fare channel, and allow for traffic when using a taxi or car.

Do not assume there is an operating airport train because of rail-project coverage. Compare live airline routes and frequencies for your recurring destinations; a route count cannot tell you whether an early arrival, a late return or a connection works for the household.

Climate & environment

Dark winters and building performance shape daily comfort

Latvia’s official climate resources distinguish observations and climate normals. Riga’s urban setting and Jūrmala’s coast should not be assigned one invented monthly series. The station-based monthly chart should identify its station and averaging period when added to this guide.

For housing, ask about heat metering, ventilation, condensation and the winter journey from the stop. In summer, check sun exposure and whether the apartment can be ventilated comfortably. A city mean cannot resolve flooding or drainage at a particular address.

Safety & everyday risks

Use the exact address and current official advice

No verified district-level crime ranking is presented here. Neighbourhood reputation, recorded offences and a person’s comfort walking home are different kinds of evidence. Check the entrance, lighting, storage and actual late-evening transport route.

Property-payment fraud is a practical risk when arranging a move remotely: verify the landlord or agent, inspect the agreement and establish the payee before transferring funds. Do not treat an attractive classified advert as proof of ownership or availability.

Public services & practical setup

Put the address and household records in order

Use the city’s relocation guidance to connect residence status, declared address and service applications. A bank account, immigration permission and a declared address are different administrative facts; completing one does not automatically settle the others.

Obtain the building manager’s contact and a written account of water, heating, waste, electricity and internet arrangements. Keep the handover inventory and meter readings. For a home outside Riga municipality, check the relevant local authority rather than assuming that city guidance applies.

Culture, community & daily life

Choose the city you will use after the viewing weekend

Riga’s central cultural and historic environment is a practical attraction when it fits into an ordinary week. Compare a home that makes evening events easy with one that offers more space or greener surroundings but requires a planned return journey.

Include markets, a library, exercise and a language-learning or professional group in a scouting visit. A household working remotely can otherwise end up with an attractive apartment and very little local routine.

What residents say

Local preferences often come back to the river crossing

In a public neighbourhood discussion, u/IlzeLemon recommended considering left-bank areas such as Bieriņi, Āgenskalns and Torņakalns for an airport-oriented routine. That is a location preference, not a promise of a fixed transfer time.

u/TheRealPoruks, who said they lived in Iļģuciems, valued its smaller-community atmosphere and improving buildings. Another contributor emphasised that airport travel time depends on the hour. The comments help frame a test journey; they do not establish which neighbourhood is best for every family.

u/IlzeLemon suggested testing left-bank areas for airport access; u/TheRealPoruks described enjoying the smaller-community atmosphere of Iļģuciems.

Planning your move

Plan the move around the decisions that depend on each other

Before choosing a permanent home in Riga, settle the applicable right to reside and work, shortlist a school if needed and price health cover. A property purchase or lease is not a substitute for immigration permission. Keep the move date consistent across the employment, housing and tax plan.

Use the first visits to repeat actual weekday journeys, inspect the home in daylight and at night, and collect written answers from the school, clinic and landlord. After arrival, complete the applicable address and tax registrations, activate utilities and keep a record of time spent in each country.

StageWhat to prepareMain dependency

On arrivalAddress, bank/payment access, school start, health-provider registration.Eligibility and service availability are different checks.
