Match the remote activity to the visa purpose
The teleworking basis concerns work performed remotely using communications technology for a foreign employer, a foreign business in which the person participates, or qualifying freelance activity mainly for customers outside Estonia. The contracts and actual work must support that description.
A D visa is permission for temporary stay. It is not e-residency, an Estonian company residence permit or an automatic long-term-residence pathway. It does not authorise every unrelated local activity merely because the holder works online.
Use the current financial-means table
The MFA table checked on 12 October 2026 lists €132 per day / €3,960 per month for teleworking. The general checklist asks for evidence covering the three months immediately before the application that demonstrates the amount, regularity and source of means. Confirm the mission’s case-specific documentary request and assess the entire planned stay.
The adult D-visa application fee is €120 in the current table, with age and statutory exemptions. Fees, travel, medical insurance and accommodation are separate from financial-means eligibility. Older articles commonly state different income figures; those are not the basis used here.
Duration and travel rights have limits
The national D visa can allow up to 365 days within a 12-month period. The MFA also states a combined limit of 548 days within 730 days for consecutive long-stay visas. The visa’s issued dates and entries control the individual case.
Travel to other Schengen states remains subject to the 90-in-180-day limit. Permission to stay in Estonia does not turn the rest of Schengen into an unlimited residence area. If the plan changes to a long-term Estonian business or employed role, review the correct further permission before the existing one expires.
Remote work can create local tax obligations
A nomad can become Estonian tax resident through a home or the 183-day test and then face worldwide reporting. Even without residence, work performed in Estonia can be locally taxable subject to treaty conditions. The overseas employer’s payroll and social-security obligations need their own analysis.
The financially attractive comparison is the complete position: departure-country residence, Estonian source and residence rules, contributions, treaty relief and the cost of compliance. Neither the visa label nor being paid to a foreign account creates a tax holiday.
Application and family planning
Apply in person to the appropriate Estonian mission or, where legally eligible, through the PPA in Estonia. Prepare the passport, application, photo, purpose and income evidence, insurance and any required public-record translations/legalisation. The mission can request further information or an interview.
Each accompanying family member needs a valid basis, financial means and insurance. The teleworking row is not a published blanket dependent package; do not borrow the startup spouse allowance. Clarify this before committing to a shared lease or withdrawing children from school.
