Start with the account’s purpose and the provider’s status

Distinguish a personal current account, an operating company account, payment processing and investment custody. An Estonian IBAN, a convenient app and an e-resident customer policy do not describe the same legal service. Identify the legal entity, authorisation, permitted countries and the service needed before submitting an application.

E-residency provides a way to identify and administer digitally; it does not compel a bank to accept the holder or their company. The official programme recommends contacting the bank before travel. A viable operating plan should therefore consider banking alongside company formation rather than after it.

What banks need to understand

Explain the owners, real activity, relevant Estonian connection, source of capital, expected customer and supplier countries, currencies and payment volumes. Supply contracts and an ownership chart consistent with the company’s public records. A vague “international consulting” description is less useful than a clear description of how a normal transaction works.

LHV’s programme listing, for example, expects an Estonian company and a strong local connection and says applicants must travel to Estonia to complete its process. These are provider-specific criteria, not a universal bank rule or a guarantee of acceptance. Complex ownership, regulated activity and unusual transaction flows require an individually assessed banking plan.

Understand deposit protection before concentrating cash

The Estonian Guarantee Fund’s ordinary limit is €100,000 per eligible depositor per participating credit institution, including the covered interest. Multiple accounts at the same bank are aggregated. Certain qualifying temporary high balances can receive additional protection under defined events and time limits.

Check which country’s scheme covers a branch and whether your balance is a covered deposit. Payment or electronic-money services and investment instruments should not be assigned bank-deposit protection merely because they can hold euro balances. Separate the operational convenience of a provider from the legal treatment of client money and assets.

Keep personal, company and investment records separate

Keep business funds in the appropriate entity’s account and document owner funding, salary and distributions. For an investment account, the tax designation depends on eligibility and correct reporting; an ordinary everyday account with mixed personal spending can complicate the ledger.

Foreign income remains reportable when an individual is Estonian resident. Account location is not an exemption, and automatic international exchange of financial information does not replace the owner’s tax return. A change of residence should trigger updated bank records and a review of the investment-account deferral rules.

Sequence onboarding around real payment needs

First map the required services and countries. Next pre-screen the intended provider against residence, activity and ownership. Then submit a consistent compliance pack and complete identification. Test the essential inbound and outbound payment functions before relying on the account for payroll or customer collections.

Keep a practical continuity plan for documents, authorised signers and access. Opening time is the provider’s case-dependent decision; this guide does not advertise a guaranteed account, remote-only opening or a fixed approval deadline.
