Deregistration should reflect a genuine change of residence
Notify the commune through the applicable departure process and preserve the resulting documentation, but do not treat deregistration alone as the entire tax analysis. Establish where the new home and centre of life will be, which accommodation and family links remain in Switzerland and how often the person will return. A temporary period abroad can differ from a permanent move.
Coordinate the departure-year cantonal assessment with the first destination return. The Swiss federal rules distinguish domicile, qualifying stays and economic connections, and the relevant treaty may also matter. Swiss property or business activity can continue to create limited tax obligations after personal residence ends. Keep records of the new residence permission, housing, registrations, travel and work arrangements, so the claimed departure date is supported by facts rather than only an administrative form.
Private assets and business migration require different reviews
The ordinary exemption for gains on privately held movable assets does not mean every migration of a Swiss business or company is tax-neutral. Corporate residence, business assets, reserves and retained Swiss taxing rights must be examined separately. Identify whether the event is only a shareholder moving, a company changing its actual administration, or the transfer of functions and assets to another entity.
For an investment portfolio, preserve acquisition and valuation information even where Switzerland did not tax private gains. The destination may use a different cost basis, distinguish pre-arrival gains or classify the person’s activity as trading. Real estate, employee equity and business holdings should each receive their own analysis. Do not schedule a sale solely around a registration date without establishing residence and the legal character of the gain in both countries. A contemporaneous valuation can be important even when no Swiss private-gain charge arises.
Pension withdrawals need a destination-specific calculation
Departure can affect access to pension capital, but the conditions depend on the pension component, the destination and the relevant social-security rules. Establish whether the proposed withdrawal is available before making tax projections. The official guidance distinguishes ordinary OASI pensions from lump-sum benefits from second-pillar and tied third-pillar institutions; lump sums paid abroad can be subject to Swiss withholding.
A treaty may permit a refund or allocate taxing rights differently, while the destination can impose its own tax. Compare the combined result and the documentation needed for any refund before choosing a payment date. Do not assume an interval between Swiss deregistration and foreign registration creates a tax-free window: residence depends on substantive facts. Keep the pension institution’s written eligibility response, the benefit breakdown, payment date and withholding certificate for both countries’ advisers.
Confirm banking access and continuing obligations before moving
Swiss banks may restrict products or relationships when a client moves to a different country. Discuss the destination with each institution before departure, including access to investments, discretionary management, cards and payment services. Do not rely on retaining an old Swiss address after moving; the account’s tax-residence and due-diligence information must be accurate.
Update tax residence and identification numbers, retain final statements and preserve information needed for foreign account reporting. Review the end or revision of any expenditure-tax arrangement with the canton, together with outstanding returns and Swiss-source income. Immigration permission can also lapse or become affected by departure and prolonged absence, so check that position if returning is part of the plan. The completed departure file should reconcile the tax, pension, banking and residence records rather than handling each as an unrelated address change.
