Naturalisation requires a qualifying residence history
The national procedure registry, updated 1 October 2026, generally requires seven years of legal and permanent residence before an adult application. It lists a three-year category for EU citizens, qualifying spouses of Greek citizens with a child, specified parents of Greek children and stateless persons. Other valid residence documents outside the listed qualifying categories can lead to a twelve-year requirement. The exact permit and family category therefore matter.
The accepted permit list includes investor and property-owner categories, but the applicant still needs actual legal and permanent residence. Holding a golden-visa card while mainly living abroad does not establish that condition. The registry also addresses particular birth and diplomatic-family circumstances. Build the permit and travel chronology before concluding which residence period applies.
Language, knowledge and integration must be demonstrated
The ordinary knowledge requirement covers Greek language, history, geography, culture and political institutions. Applicants normally obtain the Certificate of Knowledge Proficiency for Citizenship through the official examination, with defined educational exemptions. A general language-class certificate is not necessarily equivalent to the required citizenship certificate. The examination portal publishes the actual application windows and arrangements.
Economic integration includes income and compliance with tax and social-insurance obligations. Social integration examines stable ties and Greece as the permanent base of daily life. The applicant’s employment, family, schooling, voluntary activity and residence can be relevant evidence. Good-character, criminal-record, public-order and lawful-status conditions also apply; sufficient years alone do not complete the eligibility test.
Prepare the documents and the correct fee category
The registry lists a full passport copy, valid qualifying residence document, knowledge certificate or accepted exemption, authenticated and officially translated birth record, relevant marriage/name-change documents and proof of the electronic fee. Tax assessments for the relevant three-, seven- or twelve-year history and supporting economic and social integration records form part of the file. An AMKA social-insurance number is also listed.
The current registry gives €550 for the ordinary initial application, €200 for an ordinary resubmission and €100 for specified categories including EU citizens, stateless persons and refugees. These are government application fees, not the full cost of examinations, translations or professional work. Verify the fee code for the applicant’s category. A renewal receipt may support lodging in specified circumstances, but the definitive qualifying permit is needed before the final decision.
Distinguish the published deadline from actual completion
The application goes to the regional nationality directorate, with documentary review, formal eligibility checks, official record checks and the substantive assessment following in sequence. The registry lists a one-year completion deadline; this should be labelled as the official procedural framework, not a guaranteed delivery estimate including examination preparation, document collection or any deficiencies.
After approval, complete the required oath and registration before treating a passport application as available. Keep residence permission valid while the process is pending and respond promptly to notices. A descent or other family claim may provide a different route and should be assessed before defaulting to residence naturalisation. Nationality, residence rights and tax residence remain distinct: acquiring Greek citizenship does not itself end obligations in another country.
