Choose the account around the job it needs to do

For a household, compare salary receipts, rent and direct debits, cash access, cards, international transfers, language support and the charges under your actual usage. BaFin’s independent comparison covers current and basic accounts and lets users compare fee and service features; it does not recommend a bank.

For a business, add customer/payment geography, currencies, payment processing, user permissions, accounting exports, credit and the ownership structure. A personal account does not automatically permit company transactions. Corporate onboarding is a commercial and compliance assessment, not a right arising from the consumer basic-account rules.

The basic-account right has a defined scope

In principle, a consumer legally resident in the EU who does not have a qualifying German payment account can be entitled to a Basiskonto under the Payment Accounts Act, subject to the legal refusal grounds. The category includes certain people without a fixed address and specified asylum/non-deportable cases.

The basic functions include deposits, withdrawals, transfers, direct debits and a debit card. The provider need not offer an overdraft or credit card. This right should not be advertised as guaranteed private banking, a remote nonresident corporate account or a way around identity verification.

Deposit protection is per institution, not per account

The standard statutory deposit guarantee is €100,000 per eligible depositor per institution. Two accounts at the same licensed institution do not automatically double protection. Identify the legal institution behind a brand or app and the actual scheme covering it.

A banking licence, a payment/e-money service and investment custody are different arrangements. Protection for a deposit is not insurance against market losses in shares or funds. If a large balance is needed for a property purchase or relocation, obtain the applicable protection terms rather than assuming every amount shown in an app is equally covered.

Opening and maintaining the account

Obtain the provider’s current checklist and identity-verification options before making a transfer dependent on account opening. A complex ownership chain, unsupported activity or inconsistent source-of-funds evidence can require further review. No account-opening timeframe is asserted for all German banks.

After opening, test the required transfer, card and approval functions; set suitable user access; and maintain a second way to meet essential obligations. Keep address, tax residence, ownership and authorised-person information current. Before leaving Germany, ask how a change to nonresident status affects the specific account and product set.

How international planning helps

The useful question is whether a particular German account fits the household or business and how it works with accounts elsewhere. Account access, taxation and company substance need separate answers. We can assess the wider banking requirement and define available assistance after the actual applicant, activity and provider appetite are established; this guide does not claim a pre-existing relationship with every German bank.
