City at a glance

Decide what kind of island life you want

Victoria can suit someone who wants a smaller urban routine with waterfront walks, neighbourhood centres and access to Vancouver Island. It is also an island base: regular meetings or family visits on the mainland need a transport plan of their own. Compare that ordinary week before choosing the city from a harbour photograph.

Be precise about the address. The City of Victoria and Greater Victoria are not interchangeable. Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt and the West Shore have their own geography and municipal services, and the relevant school district can change. Use an actual address for the school, transit and local-service checks.

What may appeal

  • Neighbourhood centres, waterfront settings and community activities support varied local routines.
  • A smaller-city base can work for households comfortable with the island travel pattern.
  • Published transit, school and local hazard information supports address-specific planning.

What to weigh up

  • Mainland travel includes terminal and ground time as well as the crossing.
  • The municipality, school district and route can change across nearby addresses.
  • Housing, ongoing healthcare and childcare each need a separate availability check.

Neighbourhoods & finding a home

Make the housing commitment specific

B.C.'s usual residential security-deposit cap is half a month's rent; a permitted separate pet-damage deposit can add another half month. Confirm the applicable tenancy category, written agreement and payment labels. Avoid treating a visitor booking or room sharing facilities with the owner as automatically equivalent to a standard self-contained tenancy.

A smaller city does not make a property-specific budget unnecessary. Compare rent, heating, electricity, connectivity, parking and the cost of mainland travel. Ask what is included and what the tenant must arrange. At handover, document condition, keys, meter readings and any furnished inventory.

For a home used as a long-term base, inspect comfort in wet weather as well as on a bright day: windows, ventilation, drying space, heating and the workspace. Ask about pet permission, bicycle storage, visitor rules and how the tenancy ends or continues. Keep the agreement and any building rules together so that a practical restriction does not emerge after the move.

Schools & childcare

Match the school district and childcare to the address

Greater Victoria School District 61 publishes a catchment and registration process, but its name does not mean it covers every address marketed as Greater Victoria. Establish the responsible district first. Then ask about the assigned school, capacity, language support and the documents needed for the child's category.

SD61 routes permanent-resident and refugee-claimant families through its Welcome Centre. Families holding work or study permits are directed to the International Education assessment route for funding eligibility. Do not assume every temporary resident is automatically a tuition-free domestic student. Assemble identity, parentage, immigration and address records and obtain the school’s specific instructions.

Local community centres offer family activities and, in some cases, childcare, but a program listing is not a vacancy. Confirm age group, hours, waiting list and holiday arrangements directly. Include after-school coverage and transportation in the decision, particularly if both parents work or a parent travels regularly.

Healthcare

Put healthcare continuity into the move plan

Eligible new or returning B.C. residents ordinarily wait for the rest of the month residency is established plus two more months before MSP begins. The ministry decides when that residency starts, taking immigration status into account. Confirm the dates and arrange suitable protection for any gap. A temporary visitor stay does not necessarily begin the waiting period.

A health card does not secure a family doctor. The provincial Health Connect Registry matches residents with an available family doctor or nurse practitioner; use the current local care directory while waiting and keep the registry details current. For someone with ongoing treatment, bring records and prescriptions, understand private-policy limitations and identify the appropriate services before there is an urgent need.

This is particularly relevant when comparing Victoria with a larger mainland base: ask where the specific ongoing treatment can be delivered and whether travel would be required. The answer depends on the service and individual needs; the presence of a nearby hospital is not a substitute for that check.

Airports & international connections

Understand the complete airport and ferry journey

YYJ is on the Saanich Peninsula rather than beside downtown. Since 8 September 2026, BC Transit has offered selected early-morning and late-night Route 72A trips between downtown, YYJ and Swartz Bay. Routes 87 and 88 continue to provide airport service with connections at McTavish for other times. A direct trip exists at specified times; it is not an all-day high-frequency airport express. Check the dated schedule against the flight.

The main Swartz Bay–Tsawwassen ferry crossing is scheduled at about one hour 35 minutes. That is sailing time, not downtown Victoria to downtown Vancouver. Add the journey to the terminal, required arrival/check-in time, waiting and the ground trip at the other end. Compare the complete itinerary for a regular mainland appointment, including what happens if a sailing or connection is disrupted.

For daily life, the regional bus network and cycling routes may work well for a chosen set of destinations. Test them from the actual home, including evening service. If driving on a foreign licence after becoming resident, review ICBC's exchange or testing route and its usual 90-day limit, with the applicable exceptions. Gather licence history before moving.

Public services & practical setup

Use the waterfront thoughtfully and build a local routine

For a waterfront home or regular activity, consult the city's tsunami hazard information and learn the local response instructions. The city says most of Victoria is outside the hazard zone; the relevant question is the actual location and evacuation route. Register for the appropriate local alerts, which may differ outside the City of Victoria. This is ordinary location planning, not a reason to treat the entire region as one hazard category.

Victoria's community centres, neighbourhood associations and community gardens provide concrete ways to test the social side of a move. The city lists gardens that accept volunteers as well as allotment gardens with their own arrangements. A recurring activity gives a better picture of belonging than a weekend itinerary of attractions.

During a scouting visit, try a normal workday, a shopping trip and an evening activity. Add a mainland journey if it will be frequent. That combination shows whether the island setting supports the life you want, including the practical obligations that come with it.

Planning your move

Coordinate the international questions before the household move

Victoria's lifestyle appeal is separate from the immigration and tax basis for living in Canada. Before a business owner moves, the Canada analysis should address work rights, management of foreign companies, remuneration, relevant asset values and reporting. A foreign client base does not make those questions disappear.

Tell us the proposed family move, current citizenships and residences, business activity, ownership and expected travel pattern. If the household will split time between countries, include that at the outset. The useful objective is a practical relocation plan with the international consequences understood before the long-term commitments are made.

Your move, step by step

A practical order for settling in. These are planning stages, not promised government processing times; school, insurance and housing decisions often run in parallel.
