An income-supported residence, not a working route

Ireland’s retirement guidance calls for financial independence, including €50,000 annual income for the individual and access to a substantial reserve for major unexpected expenses. It gives the value of a residential dwelling as an example of that reserve. An Irish accountancy firm must verify the finances.

Stamp 0 conditions need to be read alongside the retirement approval. The general stamp guidance does not permit work, business or a profession unless the permission specifically authorises it. A founder continuing daily operations should therefore assess another route rather than describing active work as retirement.

Apply in the right order

All applicants must seek the relevant permission before arrival. Where a visa is required, the approval is followed by the correct D-Reside visa application. Entering as a visitor is not a substitute for completing this process. After permitted entry, complete immigration registration within the applicable period.

Prepare identity and civil records, the reason for the request, Irish connections, a financial schedule and supporting bank evidence, police clearance and the required medical information and private insurance. The authority specifically requires insurance with full private-hospital cover.

Document the household’s real finances

An investment portfolio’s market value is not the same as recurring income or readily accessible reserves. Present liabilities and regular spending as clearly as assets. An accountant reviewing overseas records needs enough evidence to reconcile them, not just a letter reporting a total.

Budget for the Irish accountant, insurance, document preparation, government registration and any visa charge, as well as housing and ongoing living costs. This draft does not publish an invented approval time. Permission, visa, entry and registration are sequential dependencies that should be visible in the project plan.

Renewal and tax

The immigration service provides a separate renewal process. Keep resources, insurance and the permission’s conditions under review and act before expiry. Confirm any family position independently rather than assuming a principal’s approval covers everyone.

Irish tax residence, ordinary residence and domicile can affect foreign income and gains. The immigration permission does not create a tax exemption. Review remittances and the departure from the previous country before the move, and verify citizenship eligibility separately if that is part of the long-term objective.

Individual income and an independently verified reserve

Immigration Service Delivery describes an individual annual income expectation of €50,000 and an accessible lump sum for major unforeseen expenses, illustrated by the price of a residential dwelling in Ireland. It requires independent verification by an Irish accountancy firm. A couple should not automatically treat €50,000 as a household total. The reserve is not a statutory investment paid to the government.

The financial presentation should show monthly income and spending converted to euros, explain the source and durability of each receipt and distinguish liquid savings from illiquid property or company shares. Include existing obligations and the cost of private medical insurance. A person who must continue active employment or operate a business to fund the stay should examine a different permission rather than assume foreign-paid work is permitted.

Apply before arrival, including visa-exempt applicants

All applicants must obtain the Stamp 0 retirement approval before arriving; people of visa-required nationality then need the correct D-Reside visa. Visa exemption for tourism does not remove the advance retirement-permission requirement. After arrival, the landing permission is up to 90 days and registration must be completed within that period.

Keep the approval, visa and residence-registration processes distinct. The official page states processing can take four months, but this is not a guarantee and does not include every visa, appointment or document delay. Review the live notice when filing. Renewals require continued compliance and current financial and insurance evidence; the permission does not entitle the holder to state benefits.

Irish tax remains a separate analysis

Ireland’s residence tests include 183 days in one year and the 280-day two-year test, with a 30-day exception. Ordinary residence and domicile can then affect the scope of tax and departure exposure. Non-Irish domicile can be relevant to the remittance basis, but retirement permission does not itself establish that status or exempt pensions.

Before moving, identify pension treaty treatment, foreign investment funds, rental income, capital and income mixed in accounts, and any planned asset sale. Explain how living expenses will be remitted without assuming every transfer is taxable income or every withdrawal is tax-free capital. The accountancy certification for immigration is not a substitute for this tax classification.
