Start with nationality and existing permission
British and Irish citizens generally do not require immigration permission under the Common Travel Area arrangements. Other nationals need the appropriate status for the intended stay and activity. Protected rights under the EU Settlement Scheme are different from simply holding an EU passport.
A visitor permission is not a general route to move permanently or take employment. Check the Isle of Man’s own immigration guidance and the status shown by your documents; do not assume that every UK permission has the same Manx effect.
Work permits are a separate labour-market control
Anyone who is not an Isle of Man worker normally needs a work permit for employment or self-employment unless an exemption applies. British and Irish citizenship alone does not answer that local-status question. The employer and worker should identify the applicable category before employment begins.
Holders of qualifying immigration employment documents can be exempt from the separate work-permit requirement. The correct process can therefore be a Manx work permit, an immigration route with its employment document, or an established exemption. Check which applies rather than filing unnecessary applications.
Worker Migrant changed on 1 June 2026
The current Worker Migrant route requires the employer’s Confirmation of Employment and the applicable labour-market process. Eligibility depends on the occupation, skill level, pay and employer compliance. A job offer alone is not the immigration approval.
Under the June 2026 rules, eligibility to bring a partner or spouse and children is restricted to the Higher Skilled roles described in the route guidance. The rules also constrain employment changes during the first twelve months. Families and workers considering a different employer should check the current category and any transitional protection before relying on an older description.
Make the application match the intended household
Collect identity, civil-status, employment and accommodation records and identify each person’s intended activity. The main worker’s position should be considered together with the partner’s route and work rights, children’s status and any other family member. An adult relative should not be assumed eligible merely because the principal can move.
For an overseas application, follow the Manx route’s current entry-clearance instructions and employer sequence. Leave flexibility in the proposed start date and avoid making a housing commitment depend on a promised processing time. Renewals and changes need their own evidence.
| Worker application check | Current published requirement | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| English for entry clearance | B2 in speaking, listening, reading and writing | Approved evidence or a qualifying alternative/exemption; a job offer alone is insufficient. |
| English for further leave | Normally B2; B1 where the last Worker leave was granted before 8 January 2026 | Keep the earlier permission and the relevant English evidence. |
| Maintenance evidence | The July 2026 update reinstated a 28-day holding period | Check the current required amount, permitted sponsorship and evidence dates for the exact household; do not use the superseded 90-day period. |
| Employer recruitment | Published sequence includes 14 days of Island recruitment followed by 14 days in the Common Travel Area | Employer should confirm applicable exemptions and keep evidence before requesting the CoE. |
Which permission do you need?
Start with the passport and the actual immigration document, then separately test local employment control. A British or Irish citizen may have the Common Travel Area right to live on the island but still need a Manx work permit or exemption. An eligible immigration employment document can remove the separate permit requirement. These are distinct legal routes to a lawful start.
For non-British/non-Irish applicants, the proposed activity controls the route. A work visa should be supported by a qualifying job and employer process. An entrepreneur should not apply under an old route simply because it remains described on an archived page. For any family route, check the sponsor’s status and each dependant’s circumstances before assuming one application covers everyone.
| Starting position | Immigration question | Employment question |
|---|---|---|
| British/Irish citizen | Usually no separate immigration leave under CTA | Manx worker/work-permit or exemption check remains. |
| Protected settlement status | Verify the actual grant and continuing conditions | Do not infer status from EU nationality alone. |
| Worker Migrant | Employer CoE and appropriate entry clearance/leave | Current skill, pay, employer and dependant conditions apply. |
| Holder of qualifying IED | Read the work permission in the document | May be exempt from separate local work permit. |
| Visitor | Permission for the permitted short visit | Not a general relocation or employment authorisation. |
June 2026 changes: the protected cohort matters
The new Worker Migrant rules took effect on 1 June 2026. They restrict dependants to the Higher Skilled roles described in the guidance and constrain employment changes during the first 12 months. Before applying those rules to an existing worker, establish the relevant dates and documents.
The official transition announcement preserves the earlier regime for visa or CoE applications submitted before 1 June 2026 and for CoEs issued before that date supporting later visa applications. The policy-notices page specifically refers to CoE applications received before 00:01 on 1 June. Keep the submission receipt and the CoE issue date; a general description such as “moving in June” is not enough to determine the cohort.
From employer assessment to arrival
The following is the dependency order for an ordinary overseas Worker Migrant case, not a promised processing timetable. The employer must establish eligibility and complete the required labour-market and compliance process before the worker relies on a CoE. The applicant then follows the route’s overseas entry-clearance instructions from their country of residence.
Keep the proposed employment start flexible until the necessary permission is in place. For renewal, the current guidance calls for the most recent CoE, issued within the preceding 3 months, with the appropriate worker or dependant form. An employer change requires new approval; a job offer is not permission to disregard the first-year restriction.
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| 1. Job and route review | Employer establishes eligible role, pay, skill category and recruitment evidence. |
| 2. CoE process | Employer obtains the current Confirmation of Employment. |
| 3. Personal and family evidence | Applicant assembles identity, relationship and route-specific supporting documents. |
| 4. Entry-clearance application | Overseas applicant submits through the instructed process; Manx Immigration decides. |
| 5. Arrival and lawful employment | Check the issued permission, start conditions and any separate registrations. |
| 6. Renewal or change | Diary expiry, current CoE and any restrictions before agreeing new work. |
Families and practical eligibility questions
For a new-regime Worker Migrant, the role must be on the relevant Higher Skilled list before relying on sponsorship of a spouse, civil partner, qualifying unmarried partner or dependent child. The protected pre-1 June 2026 cohort needs its own transition check. An adult parent is not automatically included. Read the partner’s permission for work conditions rather than assuming the principal worker’s grant settles everyone’s rights.
Arrange accommodation that fits the entire permitted household and prepare civil records early, including any custody or consent evidence relevant to children. School admission and medical registration do not replace immigration permission. If the household depends on a partner’s immediate earnings, make that a route feasibility question before signing the employment contract.
| Family question | Decision needed before applying |
|---|---|
| Are unmarried partners recognised? | The current Manx permissions guidance includes qualifying unmarried partners; evidence must satisfy the applicable relationship rules. |
| Does the occupation permit dependants? | Verify the Higher Skilled occupation classification, or the precise protected earlier-CoE transition. |
| What is the child age limit? | Check the current Worker rules for first applications, extensions and dependency. This guide has not independently verified the complete current child-age provision and does not substitute a universal cutoff. |
| Can the partner start work? | Confirm the conditions printed on that person’s grant before relying on their earnings. |
| What about custody, school and housing? | Resolve civil/custody evidence and adequate accommodation; school or medical registration does not grant immigration permission. |
