Separate the D visa from the residence-permit procedure

The practical sequence starts with route eligibility, then collection of identity, accommodation, financial, insurance and route-specific evidence, followed by the competent consular application. Foreign official documents can require apostille or legalisation and Bulgarian translation. Family applications need their own relationship and dependency records. Use the current consular checklist rather than a generic company-formation document list.

After lawful entry, complete the residence application and registration required by the selected ground. Visa validity, the permitted entry period, the residence filing deadline and card validity are separate. This research does not verify one universal current fee or actual processing duration across all D-visa grounds; obtain the route-specific tariff, legal decision period and appointment availability before setting a move date. Preserve the application receipts and the written conditions of the permission.

Residence depends on several alternative connections

Bulgaria’s National Revenue Agency lists a permanent address, presence exceeding 183 days in any twelve-month period, specified overseas assignments and a Bulgarian centre of vital interests as residence connections. A permanent Bulgarian address does not establish residence where the centre of vital interests is outside Bulgaria. The latter examines family, property, work, business activity and where assets are managed.

Both entry and exit days count as days of presence; stays solely for education or medical treatment have a specific exclusion. The tax year is the calendar year, but the presence window is not simply January to December. Residents are generally taxed on Bulgarian and foreign income, while nonresidents are taxed on relevant Bulgarian-source income. Use the domestic tests and then the applicable treaty where there is a competing residence claim, rather than relying on a registration address.

Make the tax and operating setup match the move

Register for the applicable tax and social-insurance obligations and arrange recordkeeping for local work and foreign receipts. A person with overseas clients should determine whether the activity is employment, independent services or a company business. These distinctions affect deductions, insurance and who is responsible for withholding or paying tax.

For an existing foreign company, review the consequences in both countries before transferring management, staff, assets or contracts. The original country may continue to claim corporate residence or a taxable operation. Bulgaria’s 10% corporate rate applies to the appropriate taxable company profit, not automatically to every foreign business owned by a new resident. Banking onboarding should be supported by the actual ownership chain, business model and funding history.

Plan beyond the first residence card

Calendar renewal evidence, address updates, insurance and any continuing employment or business conditions. A route that depends on a specific employer, family relationship or other factual ground must be reviewed when that fact changes. EU travel rights associated with lawful residence are not the same as a right to live or work permanently in another EU country.

If citizenship is a long-term objective, distinguish temporary residence from the permanent or long-term status needed for the ordinary naturalisation route. The citizenship statute generally requires five years holding that qualifying status, alongside other conditions, rather than five years from the first tourist visit or company registration. Bulgaria repealed the investment-citizenship shortcut; an investment residence arrangement should not be presented as a guaranteed accelerated passport.
