City at a glance
What living here involves
Istanbul’s geography is central to the relocation decision. Its European and Asian sides contain different neighborhoods and daily destinations; the Bosphorus is both part of the city’s appeal and a practical element of movement across it.
Start by identifying where your household will work, study and spend ordinary evenings. A home chosen for a view or a celebrated district can be poorly matched to repeated journeys on the other side. The aim is to choose a city routine first and a property second.

What may appeal
- Distinct neighborhoods and waterfront settings support very different urban lifestyles.
- A well-chosen local base can make much of daily life happen nearby.
What to weigh up
- Cross-city and cross-Bosphorus commitments can complicate the week.
- A scenic location does not necessarily suit the airport or workplace you use.

Choose For Sale or For Rent and the Istanbul district. Compare net and gross floor area separately; verify the building, lease terms and recurring building charges.
Where to begin your neighborhood search
Official destination material distinguishes Asian-side areas such as Kadıköy, Moda and Üsküdar, alongside European-side districts including Beşiktaş and Karaköy. Use those contrasts to plan a visit rather than assuming the city has one central lifestyle.
Stay near two different candidate areas and repeat the same errands and commute. Inspect the streets around the home at busy and quiet times, and check noise, light, stairs or lifts and the actual work room. A memorable waterfront visit is only one part of assessing long-term housing.

Airports & international connections
Getting around and reaching the airport
Istanbul Airport, IST, is in Arnavutköy on the European side. Read the airport code on every itinerary because the city is also served by a separate airport on the Asian side. The choice of home should account for the airport you will actually use.
For a route that crosses the Bosphorus or combines transport modes, plan the complete journey and test it at the relevant hour. Count the transfers and final walk. Do not assume that two homes with similar map distance to a workplace will create a similar commute.

Climate & environment
Weather and the home you choose
Türkiye’s meteorological service describes several climatic regions, with Istanbul in a transitional coastal setting rather than the same conditions as the Mediterranean coast or inland Anatolia.
Inspect winter heating, ventilation and warm-weather comfort. Check the property’s light and exposure as well as rain access from the street. If the home’s principal attraction is a terrace or view, assess the indoor rooms just as closely because they will support most of the working week.

Planning your move
What to check on a scouting visit
Use a normal working week to test the city. The following are practical checks, rather than promises about any particular property or neighborhood.
- Choose the work or school side of the city before narrowing the housing shortlist.
- Test the complete cross-city journey, including any water or rail connection.
- Confirm the actual airport code and transfer, and inspect year-round housing comfort.
Plan the move around the life you will actually lead
Build a shortlist around the places you need to reach repeatedly: your workspace, schools, regular appointments and airport. Compare the total household budget for those actual addresses, including transport, utilities and the services you expect to use. A cheaper home can be a poor choice if it creates a daily journey you would not want to repeat.
Keep the lifestyle decision connected to the legal plan. The linked country resources cover residence permissions and taxation separately; choosing a home does not by itself establish a particular tax result. We can help bring the relocation, business, banking and implementation decisions together.

Participants valued the city’s scale, cultural life and opportunities while raising commuting, language and household-cost concerns. They also disagreed about access to nature, with some pointing to parks and northern forest areas. The disagreement is retained rather than presenting one view as universal.
